BMS engineering

We select or engineer the right battery management system for your pack — protection, balancing and monitoring matched to the chemistry and load profile. Every solution is tested together with the pack before delivery.

What is a BMS?

A BMS (battery management system) is what protects a lithium battery pack. It watches the cell voltages and the pack current, cuts off charging or discharging when needed, and balances the cells so the pack ages evenly.

Selected or engineered

Many packs are well served by an off-the-shelf BMS, as long as it is chosen correctly. We take into account the cell chemistry (Li-ion or LiFePO4), the number of cells in series, continuous and peak current and the load profile of the device. When no ready-made unit fits, we engineer a BMS for your pack.

Protection, balancing and monitoring

  • Protection against overcharge, over-discharge, overcurrent and short circuit.
  • Cell balancing, so no cell falls behind the others.
  • Monitoring that shows the state of the pack.

Tested together with the pack

Every BMS solution is tested together with its battery pack before handover, so the protection trips at the right moment and the pack works in the device as it should.

Frequently asked questions

Does every lithium battery pack need a BMS?

Yes. A lithium pack made of several cells needs protection and balancing — without a BMS a single cell can be overcharged or over-discharged, which shortens the life of the pack and is dangerous.

Can the BMS of an existing battery be replaced?

Often, yes: if the cells are fine but the BMS is faulty or does not suit the load, it can be replaced. We assess the battery before starting.
